FIELD REPORTS / ASTUDIAETHAU ACHOS
The "Stranded" Smart Home Rescue
A client in Cowbridge invested heavily in a proprietary cloud ecosystem. When their internet connection (Openreach) failed during a winter storm, they couldn't control their heating or lights. They were frozen out of their own home.
VIEW TECHNICAL ANALYSIS
THE PROBLEM
The system relied on round-trip communication to a server in California. Latency was high (2 seconds), and reliability was zero without WAN access.
THE MAC PLUS FIX
We replaced the cloud hub with a Home Assistant Green unit. We flashed the WiFi bulbs with ESPHome firmware. The result: The house runs entirely on LAN.
RESULT: 0.1s latency. 100% Uptime during storms. £0 Monthly fees.
Escaping the Wix "Rent Trap"
A local bakery was paying £35/month for a simple 5-page Wix site. Over 5 years, they had paid £2,100. The site was slow on rural mobile networks, causing customers to leave before the menu loaded.
VIEW FINANCIAL ANALYSIS
THE MATH
Client was facing a 15% price hike. PageSpeed score was 45/100 (Red).
THE MAC PLUS FIX
We rebuilt the site using Static HTML5. We hosted it on Cloudflare Pages (Free Tier). No database. No plugins. No fees.
RESULT: Client ROI achieved in Year 3. Google Speed Score: 99/100.
The "Nanny Cam" Privacy Audit
A family installed cheap WiFi cameras to monitor their property. They didn't realize the default password was "admin" and the video feed was being routed through a server in a country with loose privacy laws.
VIEW SECURITY ANALYSIS
THE BREACH
Packet sniffing revealed the camera was sending 2GB of data daily to an unknown IP address.
THE MAC PLUS FIX
We installed a Local NVR (Frigate) with object detection running on a Coral TPU. Footage is stored on a hard drive in the cupboard, not the cloud. Remote access is via WireGuard VPN only.
RESULT: 100% Privacy. No monthly storage fees. Total control.
INSIGHTS / MEWNWELEDIADAU
Why I Stopped Selling Ring Doorbells (And What I Install Instead)
It costs £4/month. Doesn't sound like much, until you realize you're paying £500+ over a decade just to see who is at your own front door.
READ PROTOCOL
Ring and Nest have a "Cloud Tax." If you stop paying, your smart doorbell becomes a dumb doorbell. You lose recording, person detection, and sometimes even the ability to talk back.
The Sovereign Alternative: In my local builds, I use brands like Reolink or Amcrest mapped to a local server. You get the same notifications on your phone, the same two-way talk, but the video lives on a hard drive in your hallway.
SAVINGS: £48/year per camera forever.
The 30-Year Website: Why Static is Future-Proof
Dynamic sites (Wix/Wordpress) are like milk; they spoil if you don't attend to them. Static sites are like honey; they last forever.
READ PROTOCOL
If you stop paying Wix, your website vanishes. You are renting your digital land. A "Static" website is just a file folder of code. I can hand it to you on a USB stick. You can host it anywhere—often for free (Cloudflare Pages, Netlify).
For rural Welsh businesses where 4G signals can be weak, static sites load instantly because there is no database to query. It's lighter, faster, and unhackable.
What Happens When The Internet Dies?
When the next winter storm hits the Valleys and Openreach goes down, will you be able to turn on your lights?
READ PROTOCOL
I perform a "Disconnect Test" on every home I build. I physically unplug the router and tell the client to try and control their home.
The Cloud House: "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble connecting to the internet." (Lights fail, heating schedule fails).
The Sovereign House: Everything works. The local hub (Home Assistant) doesn't care if the internet is down. Your home should not be dependent on a server in California.
